So, your fave music tee just got a rip – do you part with it or think about how reincarnation could make that T-shirt live on. Maybe that AC/DC shirt will become part of your next quilting project to keep you warm while you watch a movie, or it could replace the cover on an old journal, or it could be turned into a shopping bag! At Southwest, we’re always looking for ways to recycle and use our resources responsibly. In fact, since we rolled out our co-mingled recycling program in 2008, we’ve diverted nearly 7,000 tons of materials from landfills and into recycling facilities. That’s equal to the weight of nearly 165 Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Now, we’re asking you to show us your commitment to the environment—share your creative and unconventional ways you recycle ordinary objects like water bottles, t-shirts, and newspapers for the chance to win a Southwest-branded bike, two annual park passes from the National Park Foundation, and a green vacation getaway for two to sunny San Diego including air fare, Hybrid car rental from Alamo, and hotel accommodations for two nights at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, courtesy of Southwest Vacations. All you have to do is e-mail a creative photo and 500-word essay or less to write.southwest@wnco.com no later than Friday, April 27, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. CT that shows how you’ve found a new way to use ordinary items and divert waste from your local landfill. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing: • Turn an empty wine bottle into a vase or candleholder for your table • Wrap your gifts or ripen up your tomatoes using old newspapers • Cut plastic bottles into sections to have a container garden We’re excited to hear your creative ways on how you’re applying the three “R’s”—reduce, reuse, recycle! We switched all the bills we can to paperless automatic billing from our checking account to cut down on the need for paper invoices and we also bought a paper shredder so the paper we do get we shred and use for Easter basket, Christmas bags and baskets filling and also to put protection in boxes when sending gifts to our grown children and grandchildren around the world instead of plastic bubbles. We also buy our airline tickets and other needed items online saving a lot of energy going to physical stores etc, Thank you Southwest for all you do as well to help save our environment.
