Going Green: Animals Need Toys, Too!

Happy Green Tuesday!  As a Southwest Intern, working for a Company who shares my appreciation for the Planet and finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle is very important to me.  Off the clock, I recently had the opportunity to volunteer at the local SPCA animal shelter here in Dallas.  The next time you find yourself throwing away blankets or toys, be green!  Give your garbage man a break and head to a local animal shelter near you.

Meet Chance. He is a rescue dog at the SPCA animal shelter in Dallas. Chance is searching for a forever home, but in the meantime, he relies on donations to keep him healthy, warm, and active. Did you know some of your old belongings could provide this for him?

The next time you go to throw out an old blanket, sheet, or towel, think of Chance. He can use it to line his kennel to stay warm. Your old dog or cat toys, or even your children’s used plush toys can be donated as well. As long as a dog or cat cannot choke on the toy or pull small parts off of it, the toy can be donated. This simple act can help dogs or cats occupy themselves while they are in their kennels.

While the SPCA in Dallas cannot accept dry dog food, other animal shelters are always in need of dry or canned food and treats. These aren’t “recycled” items, but it’s something that shelters greatly appreciate.

At Southwest Airlines, we are always looking for ways to further reduce our impact on the environment and use our resources responsibly.  What are you doing to show the three R’s—reduce, reuse, recycle—some LUV?  Let us know by commenting below or by sending an e-mail to green@wnco.comDING!  You are now free to be green!

Note: the needs of animal shelters can differ depending on the location, so make sure you check before you go. If you would like to donate to the SPCA in Dallas, you can view their wish list here.
