A few weeks ago, before I transitioned from a Communications Intern to a Customer Relations Telephone Representative, a group of my fellow Interns decided that we needed to recycle our growing collection of newspapers.

In the end, we came up with a plan that was furry, cuddly, and downright cute.  We decided to donate our newspapers to the local pet shelter!

Dog Volunteering

We had a great time playing with the adorable animals housed at the pet shelter, and we got a glimpse of the hard work and dedication that the shelter volunteers put in each day.

Pet shelters have many needs besides pet adoption that often go unfulfilled. Some of the accepted items that are a great way to put your recycling initiatives to a good cause include:

  • Plastic bottles, rinsed and labels removed
  • Gently used cat and dog toys
  • Cardboard paper towel and toilet paper dowels
  • Old comforters and blankets
  • Newspapers and magazines

As each location has different needs, check out your local pet shelter to see exactly what’s on their wish list.   Remember, when you’re not dropping your recyclables in the blue bin or finding other uses for items, it’s all ending up in our landfills.  Do your part and reduce, reuse, recycle!
