I understand I need to buy a adult ticket for my 13 year old who will travel by himself this summer. Will he need any ID to get through security such as a passport or copy of birth certificate?
Additionally, reading these boards it appears I can request a escort pass at the ticket counter? What do I need to have on hand in order to request this? The escort pass allows me to escort him to the gate, correct?

Check out Southwest's young traveler guide: https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/family/young-travelers.html
It does say the child should have something for proof of age in addition to contact information for adults dropping off and picking up the child. The guide also talks about the escort pass which you can get to go to the gate with the child.
