Changing flights base on a family illness

Hello,

I am trying to make reservations to fly back to Texas to help take care of my mom who has recently been admitted to the hospital.  I don't know if I am going to have to stay longer than expected and don't want to end up with large change fees. What is the best way to make a reservation?  I have already has to pay $620 fees with other airlines to cancel our vacation plans because of her illness. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Purchase a one way ticket to get to your destination.  Then purchase another one way ticket for your return.  There are no change fees if you have to change the date of your return but you will have to pay the difference in the fare price.

You can also get a doctors letter which can help waive the change fee due to illness in the family
