My flight was cancelled on the day of travel and the. I had to re book. I then had to check in again and lost my good boarding position
all because the airline had a “mechanical issue” for which my flight was cancelled. At the gate they said no solution unless I paid for preboarding.

They can't give out positions for a same day flight because they are already assigned unfortunately. There isn't any provision for inserting additional passengers to those already assgined flights.
Tell the gate agent your story, maybe they will let you in at the "A61" spot but otherwise hopefully you can roll with it and it doesn't happen again.
