I was on a flight yesterday afternoon from LGB to SMF during which the aircraft was referred to as a 737- 800 series but that it had 175 passenger on board . It’s my understanding that the regular 737- 800 only has a capacity of 160 and that it is the Max 8 that can carry up to 175. Can you clarify?

No Max 8s are currently flying, the 737-800 has 175 seats.

One of the other carriers that includes a first class section may have fewer than 175 seats on their -800 aircraft.

Seat configuration varies depending on carrier. I believe @SWDigits was referring to Southwest (they linked to the Southwest 10-k). 😉

I'm a fan of Seat Guru which also suggests priority for legroom, lack of tray table, no recline option (sit behind that one!).

Choose your aircraft from the three options, 737-700, -800, or MAX.
