We are currently in Cabo and being hit by Hurricaine Bud. the advisory is that travel MAY be disrupted. We need to get out of here as soon as possible. How far in advance are flights cancelled and how do we find that out. Or do we have to sit in the airport and just wait to see what happens.

As there is a travel advisory in effect for Thursday through Saturday, if you are scheduled/ticketed to fly in that date range you can reschedule your flight to anything within 14 days of your scheduled flight, including earlier. So if you want to leave as soon as possible give Southwest a call to rebook.
