is it correct that after 10 years of A-list preferred status you will be A-list preferred for life?

No clue.  I do know that I have been a rapid rewards member since program inception - actually before with the stamped cards .  I have been flying southwest since 1986 - frequently - and have not achieved any permanent status...

No. There is no such "lifetime" membership level on Southwest.
