Amount of points needed to travel within states

How can you find out, prior to travel, how many points it will take to travel to your destination in the states?

My husband and I are retired and on a fixed income.  We are traveling April/18 to Fort Lauderdale, FL, and I want to make sure I will earn enough points to cover the flights for the both of us>
