Canceling a flight booked with points

I purchased a flight for a family member using rapid reward points. He had to cancel the flight. I see that the points have credited back to my account. Is there a timeline in which they must be used and do they have to be used by him (like when purchasing with money).

No, points are simply returned to your account. They are not attached to a particular passenger or carry an expiration date, as travel funds do.

(Note that all points expire after 2 years without point earning activity.)
