I received the bogus email and was so excited that somehow I had earned a companion pass with some special promotion or something that I spent a few hours booking my flight, thinking my daughter would be free so we could afford it.... only to find it was a glitch! What a let-down and waste of time. I see it's been going on for at least 2 years, too!

I received the same email. I read the other responses, and seems that this issue has not been fixed. What has been done to make this right?

An "apology" email was sent. Nothing else was done.

so I got one of the #fakenews companion pass emails today (04 April 2019), hard to understand how this problem is still not solved.

I got it too and I am curious to know how it takes over 2 years to resolve an issue like this.

Yes, i rec'd an email with the following below. Seems like it was some kind of widespread error/glitch on their behalf.
"Companion Pass Achieved! Earned through 12/31/2019."
