To finish off the $2,000 credit card spending required for the bonus RR points, can I purchase gift cards from the local grocery? Would these purchases also qualify toward Companion Pass? The fine print I’ve found says that cash-like purchases do not qualify, but I’m not sure what that means.

Thats interesting. Where did you find those terms ?
I am pretty sure you can purchase gift cards from the grocery store and it counts toward the Companion Pass.

Any standard purchase made with the credit card will get you companion pass qualifying points. The cash like purchases comment is related to using the credit card to get cash at an ATM, purchasing foreign currency, or transactions like that, and has nothing to do with gift cards.
