This is the tenth in a series of posts about our integrated annual report, the 2010 Southwest Airlines One Report™, where we have illustrated our commitment to a triple bottom line and how our passion and focus on Performance, People, and Planet continues to propel us forward.

At Southwest Airlines, we are committed to making environmentally responsible decisions and operating with a green filter, a mindset of protecting our planet while remaining true to our low-cost philosophy. Our green filter is evident in our environmental programs, procurement process, education and outreach efforts, and stakeholder involvement.  We believe it’s about more than just doing the right thing. Environmentally responsible decisions also make good business sense. We are continuously seeking new and better ways to further reduce our impact on the environment and use our resources responsibly.

One of the ways we do this is by purchasing renewable energy.   To power Southwest Airlines-controlled Dallas and Houston facilities, we’re continuing our five-year commitment to purchase 30 percent renewable energy.  In addition, we actively look for alternative fuel opportunities to power our aircraft.  We are active members of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI), which is a coalition to help develop and deploy alternative jet fuels.

Part of our commitment to being a good steward of the environment is making sure our partners understand the importance of green decisions to our Company and our Employees.  We have a great partner in Eurest, our café partner, who helped us go green with compostable containers and corn-based products.  To create a sustainable business and affect change, we all need to work together.

We are proud of our commitment to being a good citizen of the world. We look forward to sharing the journey with you in our blog post series on Performance, People, and Planet, and we hope it will inspire you to read our 2010 Southwest Airlines One Report™, which, in an effort to conserve our natural resources, can only be found online at www.southwest.com/citizenship.
