Delivering Hope to the Doorsteps of the Elderly

When I first started volunteering with Meals on Wheels, my eyes were instantly opened to the need that existed in my community. mowMeals on Wheels is a program of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) that serves meals to homebound elderly who can’t provide for themselves due to illness, disability, or advanced age.  Nearly five years have passed since I delivered my first meal with Meals on Wheels.  I have continued to volunteer not only because there is a need, but also because of the relationships I’ve developed with some of our senior citizens. This seasoned group has made great contributions to our country, and the Meals on Wheels program is one way to show them our support.  Many of the seniors are facing health or financial challenges.  Yet, despite the challenges, the people I meet always maintain a gracious attitude, a deep appreciation for the volunteers bringing them their meals, and sometimes, even friendly humor! My favorite route for delivering meals is in my home community, Irving, Texas, route 1506A, because serving my hometown gives me a deep sense of fulfillment.  Volunteering has helped me to meet people in my town and connect with them on a more personal level.  When we knock on the door, I know we are bringing much more than a meal—we are bringing comfort and hope in a time of need. Southwest Employees give from the heart yearround across the country.  Today, more than 300 Southwest Airlines Employees will volunteer From the Heart to deliver nearly 1,500 meals to senior citizens in Dallas County for the Fifth Annual Meals on Wheels Blitz.  #LUVFromtheHeart
