Every Seat Has a Story: The 50 State Project

My family of four loves to explore. As part of this love for exploration, my husband Rick and I have the goal of taking our children to all 50 states before they leave for college. We refer to this as the “50 State Project.” As of June 20, 2016, we’ve visited 48 of the 50 states.  This summer, we took a trip to Idaho, our 47th state, with a side trip to Yellowstone and Teton National Parks.yvonne 2 The only states remaining on our list are Alaska and Michigan, but we’ve already got plans in the works for both. We’ll be visiting Michigan next March for a little skiing and a stop at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Then next summer, we’ll cross off state number 50, one year before our oldest son leaves for college. One of my favorite state trips was when we visited Utah. The landscape in the southern part of the state is spectacular, and nothing like we had ever seen in the past or have seen since (although California is a close second!). I have to admit  I wasn’t really looking forward to our trip to Kansas, but it turned out to be awesome. We found the best restaurant in the middle of nowhere, we rode horses, we met the nicest people, and we attended our first Comic-Con event (in Kansas City, Missouri). yvonne 4Because we travel with children, we learned early on that the best family-friendly, domestic airline is Southwest. And not to sound like an advertisement, but the airline has always been reliable and affordable. We have used Southwest exclusively (except for our trip to Hawaii, and next summer’s trip to Alaska) because there are no surprises, and the service is consistently outstanding.yvonne 3 Our 50 State Project has given us the opportunity to build wonderful memories with our children, so we wanted to say thank you, Southwest. You’ve made many of these adventures possible. You can see our state count with a picture from each state here.
