LA Beginning October 13, Dallas Love Field is FREE!  The restrictions of the Wright Amendment will be gone, ushering in nonstop destinations that span from coast to coast.   Southwest has been counting down the years and weeks (literally—we have a billboard at the Love Field entrance and a countdown clock in our Headquarters lobby) until we can say, “Goodbye, Wright Amendment. Hello, America!"   We are excited to begin this new era by serving five new nonstop destinations on October 13, followed by ten additional new nonstop destinations on November 2.  The addition of these 15 new nonstop destinations will bring Southwest to a total of 31 nonstop destinations from Love Field. In anticipation of this momentous event, each week we will take a look at one of the cities that North Texas Customers will be able to soon visit nonstop on Southwest.  Each post is written by a Southwest Employee who is affiliated with the city and can give an insider’s view of what to see and do while visiting.  Enjoy! When you think of Los Angeles, you probably conjure up the usual images of movie stars, extravagant parties, and big flashing lights.  In reality, though, these are all pretty accurate!  And while there’s plenty of glitz and glam in L.A., this great city also offers other options for those of us who aren’t famous celebrities.  I’ve lived in Westchester—a neighborhood in west L.A.—for the past 17 years, making the area me and my husband’s first home after we were married and the community where we’ve raised our 13-year-old son. Evelyn Gravett family As for daily departures, LAX is Southwest’s eighth busiest airport.  The weather stays mostly sunny and balmy yearround, making the “City of Angels” an ideal getaway for any season.  Try out my favorite must-do things to eat, do, and see next time you’re in L.A.! Your Los Angeles to-do list: To Eat:
  • Malibu Seafood Fish Market & Café:  Along the Pacific Coast Highway, you’ll find this local favorite famous for their tartar sauce and other made-from-scratch menu offerings.  Stop by for some of L.A.’s freshest seafood and amazing ocean views.
  • Yamashiro:  Meaning “mountain palace” in Japanese, this mansion-turned-restaurant sitting high atop Hollywood is a perfect lunch or dinnertime pick if you want good food and views.  Make sure to take a look at their drink menu, which includes signature cocktails such as the Pineapple Sake-tini and Norman’s Mai Tai.
To Do:
  • Venice Beach:  L.A. has a lot of great beaches, but there’s nothing quite like a day spent at Venice Beach.  Known for its eclectic vibe and totally rad surfing, this is the perfect spot for people watching and working on your tan.
  • Hollywood Boulevard:  I’d be remiss if I didn’t recommend a visit to one of L.A.’s most infamous landmarks:  Hollywood.  Take a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard to see the Historic Mann’s Chinese Theater and the Walk of Fame, featuring the footprints of many of our Hollywood stars.
Santa Monica Pier To See:
  • Santa Monica Pier:  Get your kicks on Route 66, then spend some time on the Santa Monica Pier, where the well-known highway ends.  From Palisades Park, the view of the California coastline is particularly stunning.
  • Hollywood Sign:  While the public is no longer allowed direct access to the landmark, you can still hike or ride horses in the Hollywood Sign’s surrounding hills to get great views of both the sign and greater Los Angeles.
My City Secret:
  • Grand Central Market:  Mosey over to this downtown market to get a taste of the many ethnic influences that make Los Angeles an international sanctuary.  Housed on the first floor of the historic Homer Laughlin Building, Grand Central Market is the city’s oldest and largest public market.
