“I see my role as the conductor of a symphony. It’s my job to make sure everything comes together.”

—Mike Henkelman, Captain

Delivering outstanding Hospitality runs in Captain Mike Henkelman’s family. His father was a Pilot for Southwest for 23 years, and Mike always wanted to follow in his footsteps. After flying in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years, Mike joined Southwest in 2004 and continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve for another 10 years. Mike’s dad was able to fly on his first Southwest flight, and Mike was able to fly on his dad’s last flight. When Mike isn’t flying planes, you’ll catch him carrying Customers’ bags and helping them feel at home. Off the clock, Mike enjoys cycling, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with his wife and three kids. —Steph Logue, Communication & Outreach

Family Lessons “My dad worked hard to help build this Company. He taught me if you take care of the Employees, they’ll take care of the Customers. I do my best to take care of both.”

Valley Virtues “Phoenix has incredible weather year-round for golf and outdoor activities. My favorite thing is spring training in March.”

Job Perks “I try to make a difference in everyone’s Southwest experience, but the Customers end up making a difference in my life.”
