Southwest Airlines and the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund

Not applicable

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) is the nation’s largest non-profit organization that provides college scholarships to APIA students with financial need.  We are proud to join the hundreds of APIA-serving organizations across the country celebrating the rich heritage and diversity of our community during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.  As we commemorate our collective accomplishments and impact in shaping American history, we must not forget our many needs that are often excluded or misrepresented in society because of the false perception and aggregation of our successes.  While many APIA groups experience financial and academic success, there are many more that are being left behind without access to basic needs like a quality education.

In an attempt to address the misperception of APIA students in higher education, APIASF will be hosting our first annual Higher Education Summit, Access and Success: A Discussion on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Higher Education on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. This day-long event will bring together a multi-cultural, multi-sector group of interested stakeholders to generate an active dialog and develop strategies to address our collective issues in the access, success and completion of a higher education. The event is free and open to the public.  For more information and to register, please click HERE.

APIASF is proud of our partnership with Southwest Airlines to help provide the resources that increase access to higher education for low-income, first-generation APIA students that serve as the foundation for their future success and contributions to a stronger America. Not only is Southwest a critical partner for the upcoming Higher Education Summit by sponsoring student travel, Southwest is a strong supporter of student development by ensuring that students across the country are able to attend our leadership trainings.  Without the support of Southwest, many of our students would be unable to attend these worthwhile programs due to financial constraints.

We are thankful for the Southwest’s support of our community and hope that you can join us in ensuring that all APIA students have access to higher education and resources that cultivate their academic, personal and professional success regardless of their ethnicity, national origin or financial means. For more information about APIASF or to become involved with our organization, please visit our web site at: http://www.apiasf.org/

More than 20 scholarship recipients from the New York metropolitan area gathered at the 2009 APIASF Scholarship Benefit in New York City for an opportunity to network with professionals and receive recognition for their accomplishments.

Kim; thank you for your blog note and we are truly honored and excited with the upcoming Summit. APIASF also commissioned the second National Commission on APIA Research in Education (CARE) Report that focuses on APIA and workforce development, APIA's and community colleges and the Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and Minority Serving Institution. Attendees will be provided a copy of what we expect to be a critical and seminal paper about APIA's in the US. With your leadership and Southwest Airline's support, a number of our student scholars across the country will be able to fly to our Summit and participate with the multi-cultrual community in the day's discussion....and thank you Kim!
