A few weeks ago, our family was thrilled to be part of Southwest Airlines visit to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. We joined a group of Adopt-A-Pilot Ambassadors from across the country as they visited and toured the hospital that is changing the way childhood cancers are researched and treated.

For many of the communities Southwest Airlines serves, 2017 was a challenging year. Several places we love were impacted by natural disasters—one of the areas most impacted was Tapachula, Chiapas. People living in this area supply some of the coffee beans utilized by Community Coffee Company, our onboard partner that provides our inflight coffee. At Southwest, disaster preparedness and response is one of the core pillars of our community outreach efforts, and we are honored to play a role as the people of Tapachula rebuild.
In 2017, we announced our partnership with Mexican fashion designer Carla Fernández. To create these incredible products, Carla Fernández worked with artisans in seven different communities throughout Mexico who specialize in creating textile and embroidery designs and handcrafts that preserve the country’s rich cultural heritage. Southwest Airlines is proud to celebrate LUV Seat: Mexico during Hispanic Heritage Month and all throughout the year as a part of our Repurpose with Purpose program.
A letter from Herb Kelleher more than 20 years ago began my involvement with the Southwest LUV Classic & Party. The passion for the event, which benefits children’s charities, grew for my colleagues and me over the years—we went from simply golfing in the tournament to becoming sponsors so that we could invest directly! Two years ago, our connection to the Southwest LUV Classic & Party and one of this year’s recipients, the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), grew even stronger.
In celebration of National Teddy Bear Day, which occurs each year on September 9, Southwest Airlines and Build-A-Bear Workshop are teaming up to donate 20,000 teddy bears to charitable organizations that Southwest supports. Read more to learn about the partnership and donations.
It’s no secret Southwest Airlines is dedicated to the People and communities we serve. We love to give back and one of the many ways we do this is through our Medical Transportation Grant Program. Since the program’s inception in 2007, we have donated more than 69,000 tickets to nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations for use by patients and caregivers in need of travel assistance.

As a Flight Attendant for Southwest for the past 21 years, I’ve always been passionate about volunteering and I’m thankful to be part of a Company that supports this passion. Recently, I participated in a community opportunity that surpassed my wildest dreams with the help of nearly 30 Southwest Employees and numerous community partners!

Twice a year, Southwest Airlines organizes a companywide initiative that encourages Employees to come together and spend time volunteering in their local communities. During this year’s spring companywide initiative, hundreds of Employees put their Hearts in Action and participated in more than 70 projects across the system.
To help us create impact and make this volunteer event a success, we teamed up with one of our sustainability partners, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to bring conservation projects to cities across the country.
At Southwest Airlines, we love to inspire future generations to succeed, and one of the many ways we do that is through our Adopt-A-Pilot program. Since 1997, our Pilots have dedicated their own time to help students define, articulate, and plan for future success; all while enjoying fun-filled lessons! But for these father-son duos, this program has become more than fun—it’s become a family legacy.
Since 2013, the Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community program, in partnership with Project for Public Spaces, has awarded more than $3.6 million in grants and placemaking technical assistance to 20 organizations across the U.S. and Mexico City to transform their public spaces into thriving community gathering places.

Emerging Leaders Program Participants LEAP for their dreams. With Southwest Airlines' support, LEAP is able to bring a diverse group of individuals together in Los Angeles and New York. Participants who had not been able to travel for leadership training are now able to learn from other Asian and Pacific Islanders across the country. This national perspective has inspired creative solutions and professional opportunities.
Oakland based Pilot, Peter Vanpelt, has been inspiring students both locally and abroad for the past five years as an Adopt-A-Pilot Ambassador. Southwest’s Adopt-A-Pilot program allows Pilots to volunteer their time by visiting classrooms and mentoring students through their knowledge of aviation.
In 2007, Southwest Airlines proudly launched the Medical Transportation Grant Program (MTGP) to help provide nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations across the nation with roundtrip tickets for patients and/or caregivers in need. We are pleased to share the 2018 MTGP recipients includes 79 hospitals across the United States, including 3 hospitals that are brand new to the program this year!
Southwest Airlines partnered with GenHERation to offer two young women from the GenHERation network the chance to attend the 2018 Southwest Airlines Rally in Las Vegas. During the Rally, Melissa and Heidi heard from Senior Leaders on the main stage, connected with Southwest Employees to learn about their career journey, visited with different Teams during the Expo, and experienced the Southwest Culture firsthand.
