When an Employee starts their career at Southwest Airlines, they bring with them their own unique background, perspectives, and personal experiences. Those perspectives combined with their skills help them to do their jobs in impactful and meaningful ways. Julio Salazar joined Southwest Airlines three years ago. With him, he brought the important lessons he learned during his service in the Navy.

My friend Laura and I went to Napa Valley for a girls trip and one last hurrah before her July wedding to her boyfriend of nine years—a true fairytale romance!
Since Laura and I needed to be at the rehearsal as the bride-to-be and bridesmaid, our plan was to return the following day, which was the night before the wedding. We would land and go immediately from the airport to her rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. However, while in California, we monitored the weather and noticed that there were storms rolling in, and worried that if we didn’t come home early, we might not make the rehearsal or even the wedding.
Southwest is known for its Company Culture. It’s often imitated, and never duplicated. Did you know that we also have a Culture Services Department that is charged with championing a Culture through which every Employee knows they matter? As Interns on that Team, Emily and I focus specifically on large-scale Employee appreciation events, including our recent Culture Blitz in Houston.

Mother’s Day is always special, but here at Southwest Airlines it tends to be an extra special day as many of our Employees have followed their mom’s footsteps and now work alongside them as members of the Southwest Family. Here are a few of their stories.

It’s not a secret that here at Southwest Airlines, we are a Company that has always shown love, support, and admiration for our Military. When we discovered Olivia was seeking assistance with arranging roundtrip airfare for her father, a Vietnam Veteran, to travel to Florida to meet his grandchildren and great grandson—all of whom her father had never met before, we sprung into action.
Our Employees are known for their Company pride. When Southwest Airlines receives recognition, it’s truly a reflection of our incredible folks, taking great care of our Customers. So it’s with pride in our amazing Employees that I share that Southwest Airlines was recently recognized by The Wall Street Journal on their inaugural list of Management Top 250.
To say that Southwest Airlines went above and beyond with their Customer Service and care is an understatement. When I faced my worst fear as a police wife and not being in my home town everyone at Southwest Airlines—from start to finish—took me under their wing and treated me as one of their own family members.
Southwest has a chance to be recognized once again through commercial aviation industry magazineInsideFlyer’sFreddie Awards. Who gets to vote? Southwest Rapid Rewards members who love the unique benefits Rapid Rewards offers—and I hope that includes you!
Rachel McMains is a Operations Strategy Intern in Customer Support & Services.
Born and raised in Irvine, California, a town appropriately nicknamed “The Bubble,” I always desired to grow and “find myself” in a big city that encouraged creativity, self-expression, and passion. The eventaully lead me to Dallas and the Southwest Airlines Campus Reach Internship Program as a Operations Strategy Intern in Customer Support & Service. The diversity of people, thought, and experience that I have had the privilege of interacting with these past few weeks has made this internship that much more special.

Last week's operational challenges have created a back-log of Customer inquiries. Our Customer Contact Teams are working around the clock to respond to all Customers, so please be patient. If you are still attempting to reach Southwest via telephone or Social Channels, I would go onto Southwest.com, navigate to the "Contact Us" page, and then select email. If you need in-the-moment travel assistance, then I recommend you Tweet us.
