Twelve flights in 13 weeks sounds like a completely reasonable amount of trips to many of our most frequent-flying Customers and Crew, but as a first-time expecting mom I found myself losing the internal willpower battle to make it through my packed few weeks on the move—all while fighting the symptoms that often come with the first signs of pregnancy. [Insert green, nausea face emoji!].
Fortunately, I have a great network of Coworkers at Southwest that happen to also be moms, so I began reaching out to them in confidence begging for them to bestow their wisdom on me. Read more to see what I learned.
When our founder launched FlightAware in 2005, he wanted to provide a tool for fellow pilots and AV geeks to track live flights (at the time, there was no publicly available way of doing so). I don’t think he ever guessed 12 years later, we would be tracking sharks on our maps—but that’s exactly what happened when we partnered with Southwest Airlines to help promote Shark Week!
Southwest is known for its Company Culture. It’s often imitated, and never duplicated. Did you know that we also have a Culture Services Department that is charged with championing a Culture through which every Employee knows they matter? As Interns on that Team, Emily and I focus specifically on large-scale Employee appreciation events, including our recent Culture Blitz in Houston.
Today is National Intern Day, and we interviewed Vice President Ground Operations (and former Intern!) Anthony Gregory to discuss his career path at Southwest. Read on to learn more about Anthony’s story and his advice to interns everywhere.
We’re often asked if Campus Reach Interns are ever hired for full-time employment after their internship. Our answer: we love hiring Interns! The Campus Reach Program has built a talent acquisition pipeline here at Southwest, so you will see many of our former Interns roaming the hallways now as full-time Southwest Employees.
We know you have seen the headlines about children being separated from their parents, and many of you have asked if Southwest is engaging on this important topic. Please rest assured that Southwest Airlines is a Company that cares deeply about our People and the People we serve. As such, we issued the following statement.
On May 21, Southwest Airlines welcomed 162 new Interns to the Southwest Family. As the Marketing Department Operations and Planning Intern, I am fortunate to be one of the Interns selected to participate in the Campus Reach program. One of the best ways Southwest Airlines celebrates our “Southwest Story” is through our annual One Report. Today, we are excited to announce the release of the 2017 Southwest Airlines One Report, which highlights financial performance, citizenship efforts, and key events that occurred for Southwest throughout the past year.

Mother’s Day is always special, but here at Southwest Airlines it tends to be an extra special day as many of our Employees have followed their mom’s footsteps and now work alongside them as members of the Southwest Family. Here are a few of their stories.
Today, Southwest Airlines announces our intent to serve Honolulu, HI (Oahu); Kahului, HI (Maui); Kona, HI (Island of Hawaii); Lihue, HI (Kauai). While we do not yet have details to share on exact dates or routes, they do represent our initial footprints and top priorities for the soonest service in the State of Hawaii.
Intern Kevin Satterfield works in Network Planning & Performance and helps his Team on a variety of projects. “This internship has been very rewarding. I have a profound hearing loss, which makes hearing others and, by extension, participating difficult. However, Southwest accommodated me at all stages of the interview process, provided interpreters, and continues to ensure I have all the resources to fully contribute to this wonderful Company.”
It’s not a secret that here at Southwest Airlines, we are a Company that has always shown love, support, and admiration for our Military. When we discovered Olivia was seeking assistance with arranging roundtrip airfare for her father, a Vietnam Veteran, to travel to Florida to meet his grandchildren and great grandson—all of whom her father had never met before, we sprung into action.
When I think about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., there are several words that come to mind: civility, equality, respect, love, service, and community to name a few. Today is a great reminder of the responsibility we each have to do our part to show kindness to one another and to embrace civility, even in difficult times.
Our Employees are known for their Company pride. When Southwest Airlines receives recognition, it’s truly a reflection of our incredible folks, taking great care of our Customers. So it’s with pride in our amazing Employees that I share that Southwest Airlines was recently recognized by The Wall Street Journal on their inaugural list of Management Top 250.
It’s cooling down outside, but the competition on the football field is heating up. The annual rivalry between The University of Texas and The University of Oklahoma is a beloved tradition. As the Official Airline of the Red River Showdown, we have come up with our own friendly competition that can onlybe done one way—the Southwest Way.
Southwest Airlines partnered with GenHERation for Discovery Days 2017 to provide a day of learning about Southwest and women in the workforce for 50 young women. Among these girls was Lilly Santiago, a SWA Ramp Agent's daughter, who previously connected with many Southwest women and spent a day in the field in Baltimore.

Our Southwest story began more than 50 years ago in San Antonio when southwest Co-Founders Herb Kelleher and Rollin King first sat down to discuss the “crazy” idea of starting an airline. Since then, our Company not only survived, but became the envy of just about every other airline out there. It’s a story worth keeping track of, and that’s exactly what we do within our Corporate Archive at Southwest's Headquarters in Dallas.
