What started in a fifth grade classroom over 15 years ago has since taken to the skies! Southwest Airlines Pilot David Childs found himself looking for a way to inspire kids to have the same love of aviation his father instilled in him at a young age. Little did he know that this passion would eventually come full circle.

Read more to hear how Southwest and Adopt-A-Pilot came to eventually reunite teacher and student years later.

Bride 3_.jpeg

My friend Laura and I went to Napa Valley for a girls trip and one last hurrah before her July  wedding to her boyfriend of nine years—a true fairytale romance!

Since Laura and I needed to be at the rehearsal as the bride-to-be and bridesmaid, our plan was to return the following day, which was the night before the wedding. We would land and go immediately from the airport to her rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. However, while in California, we monitored the weather and noticed that there were storms rolling in, and worried that if we didn’t come home early, we might not make the rehearsal or even the wedding.

I'd like to give a big thanks to Southwest. Recently, my 7-year-old and 8-year-old flew by themselves for the first time. I chose Southwest to be the provider of that experience because truthfully, it seems to be the only airline left where the Employees actually enjoy their job and interacting with Customers.

While any parent would be nervous about leaving their kids alone to fly, I had faith that Southwest would not only deliver my children safely, but do it with care. So, my expectations were not low for this experience— yet you still managed to exceed them.

As a California native, my passion for the ocean started at a young age—in fact, just two months after I was born my father sat me on a surfboard for the first time. Ever since then, I have been hooked on surfing and working to preserve our oceans. I’m passionate about helping all the creatures in the ocean, which is why participating in Southwest Airlines’ Shark Week flight was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

While sitting on a recent Southwest Airlines flight, I got to talking with a kind man next to me—we talked about what we did for a living and I mentioned how passionate I am about teaching. He then asked me what the greatest challenge was that I’ve ever faced in my career. I was honest, and told him that working at a low income school can be heartbreaking—then, something amazing happened.

Whether you’ve been the parent or the innocent bystander, you’ve probably encountered a child at some point during your airline travels. Oftentimes, traveling children can become impatient, frustrated, or confused during the travel process. The trick to traveling with children is to bring food, entertainment, and mostly luck, because let’s face it—children are unpredictable.

My daughter’s high school robotics team competed at the World Championship in Houston recently, and they specifically chose to leave competition early so they would be home in time to celebrate their Senior Prom. All was going according to plan and spirits were high until they learned that their flight had a five hour delay which would put them home mere minutes before prom was to begin. Would senior prom be ruined? Not a chance with Southwest!
