One morning, as I was lying in bed, a passing thought inspired me to make a promise to myself. I decided I would do something I’ve always wanted to do every year on my birthday—essentially crossing an item off my proverbial bucket list. Anyone could foreseeably eat breakfast in Houston, lunch in San Antonio, and dinner in Dallas—it would be a great day trip! I figured I could put it on my bucket list and try it someday. Keeping a promise to yourself is more difficult than it sounds, but that day finally arrived this summer.

Ever since my obsession with the show Big Little Lies started, Monterey has been calling my name. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of joining the #SouthwestStorytellers team, so when a friend told me he was celebrating his birthday there it seemed like the perfect getaway.

During our short weekend stay, we were able to cover a lot of ground both in and around the city and discover some of the most scenic areas in California. Read more for my list of top five places to check out the next time you make it to this special part of the golden coast.

I'd like to give a big thanks to Southwest. Recently, my 7-year-old and 8-year-old flew by themselves for the first time. I chose Southwest to be the provider of that experience because truthfully, it seems to be the only airline left where the Employees actually enjoy their job and interacting with Customers.

While any parent would be nervous about leaving their kids alone to fly, I had faith that Southwest would not only deliver my children safely, but do it with care. So, my expectations were not low for this experience— yet you still managed to exceed them.

People associate a number of emotions with travel; however, adrenaline isn’t typically one of those emotions—unless you’re a Southwest Airlines Intern! On Friday mornings, before I leave for work, I always pack a backpack with the essentials for travel: a swimsuit, my passport, hiking shoes, and a rain jacket. One thing I don’t have? A boarding pass or a destination! This summer, I’ve been fortunate to spend the majority of my weekends traveling with my fellow Interns. As July is Parks and Recreation Month, we’ve been especially focused on exploring as much of America’s open space and natural wonder as possible.

Cancer is a rough, rough road, and I recently learned that caregivers are met not only on that road, but also in the sky. In May 2005, I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called mantle cell lymphoma. A terminal diagnosis coupled with a 1,200 mile journey to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in hope of staying alive is a challenge. During this time, Southwest Employees became a valuable part of my caregiving team.

Mom wouldn't go to San Francisco because "The Big One" might hit, she went and survived. She wouldn't go to Disneyland because of the crowds and the possibility of getting sick on the rides, she went and was happy. Mom was always afraid to fly, but a day before her 84th birthday, she was brave enough and flew to Las Vegas.
