Traveling with pets

I was traveling from Las Vegas to Texas over the holidays, and traveling with my pet. I was pleasantly surprised when the ticketing Agent at McCarran allowed those individuals traveling with pets to pre/ board. I thought it was an awesome idea and couldn't be more Thankful to Southwest Airlines. However, on my return flight I asked the ticketing Agent if there was pre-boarding for pets and he ingifmed me no that I would have to board with my group. It was disappointing to learn this after I was super excited...Aside from the flight being delayed 1 hour it would've been very nice to pre- board with my pet and get all situated prior to everyone else...Is this something that is being done at the discreation of certain Airports. Please help me understand....Thank you

Official policy is that passengers with pets do not pre-board, but agents have discretion as you've discovered.
