I would imagine your best route would be thru your recruiter.
Explain it's a family emergency (recruiter doesn't need details), and make sure that person knows that you really want to try again when things get straightened out.
I seem to recall something about not being able to apply for a year after a turndown. Don't know
1) if there really is such a rule and
2) if there is, whether or not it would apply in your case.
Maybe someone else can clarify.

On some routes as of mid-August - after the summer travel season.
In other cases it looks like it is effective as soon as June.
If you bought summer tickets, check the prices, and you might be able to grab lower ones and get travel funds good for future use/.

TSA doesn't prohibit it but does say that you need airline approval to carry one that size.

I suppose you need to contact the airline to get approval. Click on "contact us" below to proceed.

Hello,
Southwest canceled my flight for today.
Sorry to hear that.
No other flights were available today to my destination. I have a few questions
Since Southwest normally reschedules people when this type of thing happens, the first thing to establish is whether or not that happened here, and determine the details.
Unable to get through on the phone. No flights are available on the app. The chat function on the website goes to a bot. How do I actually talk to someone that works for Southwest?
You could try twitter or facebook. They normally work pretty well. Click on "contact us" below for details.
-Do I need to go on the apps and cancel the reservation even though SW canceled it? -if I do that, will it show that I canceled and not SW?
You should be able to establish that SW cancelled first.
-my understanding is that if an airline cancels your flight you are entitled to cashback, not travel funds. Is that correct?
Sort of. The rule is that the refund would be to the original form of payment. So credit card to credit card or travel fund to travel fund.
-what about my returning flight? I no longer need it if I can’t get to my destination. Will SW refund money for that also?
I believe that if you have a round trip ticket, than the refund would apply to both
I have lost all faith in SW today. Please resolve this issue.
Since this is a customer forum, things like this do not get "resolved" here. You have to work thru the airline.
Unfortunately, all airlines cancel flights every day. There are likely thousand, tens of thousands, or even more people, like you, that have had or will have their flights cancelled today..American does it, so do United, Delta and Spirit - they all do.
Today, you just happen to be one of them.
I hope things work out for you.

Well there is one
Wait until after the TFs have expired then convert to vouchers - fee $100 per TF - anyone can use the vouchers - good for 6 months from date of issue
If you have more than one TF, use several of them to buy any ticket and then cancel that ticket (repeat as needed) - thus turning multiple $100 fees into one $100 fee.

Let;s make sure you understand the relationship between Chase and Southwest.
Chase buys Rapid Rewards points from Southwest.
This allows Chase to use the Southwest name in the Chase promotions.
When there is a Chase promotion involving RR points, Chase alone decides who gets however many points.
Then Chase tells Southwest to add X number of points to a RR member's account.
As for why both the Chase name and the Southwest name is in a promotion, well since Chase is using the lure of RR points in an attempt to generate credit card business, it wouldn't make sense to do that sans the RR or Southwest names.

Travel funds expire one year from the date you made the original purchase, not one year from when you cancel.
And it may be less that that if you used a travel fund in paying for the ticket. If you did, then the expiration date would be the soonest expiration date of the travel fund(s) used.

???????????????????????????
Solution: get your boarding pass at the same time you do check in. After all, you are already in southwest.com or the app.
This does not have to be a two step process
edit dd: No one has ever been able to print a boarding pass before checking in -- on any airline.

Well if you want to do this, you can contact SW to tell them you want to cancel the MEM COS flight, but keep the COS - MEM flight intact. As a matter of fact you can do that yourself on southwest.com. Then you would need to book your MEM DEN flight. I'd be surprised if there is not a significant difference in price, but I've been surprised before..
I would check the price on the MEM - DEN flight before I cancelled anything.
Good luck.

Looking at reality, 2 things come to mind:
1)Trying to change your flight with a week or so to go is likely a very bad idea. When you do that, you'll likely pay a very much higher price than you initially did.
2)If you simply don't take the flight from DEN to COS, Southwest will cancel your trip home (assuming you bought a RT ticket.). Then you'll need to buy a different (likely very expensive) ticket to get home.
Recommendation: take the DEN - COS flight.
edit add: SW won't cancel the return of some who legitimately misses a connection and tries to get on a later flight - that as opposed to someone who just no shows the connection.
edit add #2: Plus, if you no show the connection you will not earn Rapid Rewards points or segments counting towards A-List - if that is important to you.

Southwest is following federal law. If you don't like it, do something that might change things - complain to the feds.

Chase offers targeted promotions -- meaning not everyone gets the same promotion.
In this case it seems Chase is trying to get people to SIGN-UP for it's priority card. Thus people that don't have that card get the promotion while those that already have it do not get the promotion.

Southwest tells everyone when it plans to next do a schedule update - subject to change.
So at this moment SW plans to do a schedule update on June 16 which will open the schedule thru January 4, 2023

As a rule of thumb, the airline makes flights available for booking about 6-7 months in advance.

Southwest did not STEAL anything. The airline is doing EXACTLY what it said it would when you bought your ticket. If you didn't like the rules, then you should not have bought the ticket.
Do you understand that if you had been on United, Delta, American et all, they would have kept the entire $1600. So Southwest is doing something no other airline would do by giving you access to $1200.

What changes is your flight from SMF to HOU.
On June 3 it is one stop same plane service to HOU. After that it is one stop HOU service with a change of plane.
Southwest has a rule that it won't book an itinerary with more than one plane change., which is what it would be starting June 4.
You can book it yourself as a multi city ticket (you still have plenty of time to connect in HOU). Be aware though that doing this will likely require you to pick up and recheck your luggage in HOU and clear TSA again.

Your chances of being allowed to get off approach 100%
1) Sit as close to the front of the planes as you can. - the first 9 rows ideally.
2)That allows you to get off the plane much earlier than the last person to de plane
3) Tell the flight attendant at the front of the plane that you are getting off and plan to return.
Chances are you'll be done with your bathroom break and be back at the gate before the last person de planes.
one more thing, leave something in your seat (not your purse) so that someone else won't take your seat.
