Monitoring the weather is an inherent part of the aviation industry, and at Southwest we do our best to be prepared for any situation. Similar to a Company’s proactive efforts, it’s important to have a personal plan that you and your family members are familiar with before severe weather arises. Emergency plans help prevent needless confusion and injuries. Here are a few things to consider when making your personal emergency plans:
Know the locations of your designated shelters. These are typically inside rooms (like a closet or bathroom) without windows on the lowest floor and that can be accessed in a matter of seconds.
Stay informed. Go online, or turn on a radio or TV for the latest emergency information. You might consider buying a battery-operated weather radio to help you stay informed even if your home loses power.
Know the difference between watch and warning: A severe thunderstorm watch or tornado watch means severe thunderstorms or tornadoes are possible in the area; a severe thunderstorm warning means that severe thunderstorms are occurring. Likewise, a tornado warning means that a tornado funnel has been spotted or detected by radar. Immediately take shelter during a tornado warning!
Have provisions for your family’s Safety and comfort during a disaster. In addition to basic emergency items (flashlights, extra batteries, a cell phone charger, an emergency whistle to sound for help, and a first-aid kit), assemble items that can meet your family’s basic needs (food, water, prescription medications, etc.) for 72 hours.
Ensure that each member of your family has multiple emergency contacts. Often local phone service can be interrupted during extreme weather, so it’s a good idea to have various contacts in different locations.
Being prepared and reacting quickly when severe weather strikes is the best way to stay safe.
