Summer can be a great time to get out of the house and have some outdoor fun. But with that comes expensive trips, long days in the sun, and – sometimes – little time for real relaxation. Downtown Denver’s Skyline Park and Southwest Airlines have teamed up to combat the tired haul of summer and provide activities that are both relaxing and fun – all at NO COST to you.
After a long start to the week and a tiring day at work, Wednesdays bring on our concert series: a summer long line-up of free concerts featuring local Denver musicians. Starting this Wednesday at 5pm our first concert, Rob Drabkin, is scheduled to kick off the summer with some after-work tunes. Bands such as The Swayback, Glowing House, and Achille Lauro are also included in the line-up, and will be featured in performances up through August 29.
If you are looking for something to do on the weekends, Skyline Park will be playing movies every Saturday night at dusk. Be sure to get there a little early to grab a good seat and to participate in our movie contests!
This week we are diving back into the 1950’s with Grease and a trivia contest meant to challenge even the most die-hard greaser. Following Grease is The Incredibles on July 21 and our first Superhero Costume Contest for kiddos’ ages 12 and under. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl plays on July 28, along with some serious competition as we open the costume contest up to adults and children in search of the most decked out pirate in the bunch.
Each week’s contest brings a new challenge, and those up to the task will win prizes from Southwest Airlines, including roundtrip tickets and other Southwest swag.

At Southwest Airlines, we have a knack for surprising Passengers. We like to be unconventional and put real personality into our work. But sometimes, it is our Passengers who surprise us with their ideas to make the flight experience a fun one. Recently, I flew to Phoenix to meet up with the Phoenix Girls Chorus, on their way to a music festival in Boston, Massachusetts. These 20 young girls are just full of vocal talent and didn’t want to wait until their arrival in Boston to give people a performance to remember. As the group arrived at the gate in Phoenix, people were already staring at this flock of teenagers in their neon green shirts. But as the "A" group took their spots in line, the real surprise began. The girls gathered in a group and sang wonderful renditions of “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri and “Thank You for the Music” by ABBA to see the Passengers onto their flight. As the chorus took their own seats on Flight 106 to Denver, they had yet another surprise in store. The Phoenix Girls Chorus teamed up with our Southwest Flight Crew to serenade Passengers with a short inflight concert! As Tracy, one of the Flight Attendants, made an announcement over the PA system, the chorus quickly divided themselves into a three-part harmony and performed a song in round to startled Passengers. Confusion quickly turned to delight on Flight 106, though, and by the end of the song the young choir received tremendous applause from every Passenger onboard! Check out our video of the performance below:

I have only been with Southwest Airlines for a few days now, but it is easy to see how much the Employees working here LUV this Company. But is LUV for your Company enough to get a tattoo commemorating it? Jeff Frazier is an Aircraft Maintenance Technician who has been with Southwest for 11 years. His tattoo story dates all the way back to his orientation, when he saw the now-retired Southwest logo on the top of his new hire training packet. “I decided right at orientation that I would get the logo as a tattoo.” And just days after completing training, Jeff got the logo emblazed on his upper right arm. Several years later Jeff got another tattooed reminder of his job at Southwest—in the form of a set of fan blades from a Boeing 737-800 (featured at the top of this post). Calvin Lawrence is a Maintenance Technician and Coworker of Jeff, who also sports a Southwest tattoo. Calvin’s tattoo neatly depicts the state of Texas in blue ink, with a large Southwest Airlines jet flying over it. When asked about people’s reactions to the tattoo Calvin said very few people are surprised by it. “Not many people know about it, and those who do just accept it. Ashley Avanzino was a different story. Ashley has two Southwest tattoos—and has worked with the Company as a spring Intern. That’s right, Ashley starts fulltime employment with Southwest today, June 4. So how does a former Intern end up with two Company tattoos? “My mom works at Southwest Airlines and has for some time now. And I love flying and loved interning here, so why not?” Ashley’s tattoos express her love of flying and love of the Southwest way. Her first tattoo depicts a map of the United States with a jet plane flying overhead; the second, a bee with Southwest wings and a tail. When asked if her tattoos surprise people, Ashley told me they were completely accepted. “I’m an aviation geek, so that helps. And people already think Southwest People are a little crazy, so it really doesn’t bother them.” After talking with Jeff, Calvin, and Ashley, crazy is definitely not the word I would use. Dedicated? Yes. Quirky? Maybe a little. But the more I talked to each of these people, the more I started to realize that a Southwest tattoo isn’t all that unconventional. These Employees have invested years of effort and dedication into helping Southwest Airlines succeed. They belong, in one way or another, to the Southwest Airlines Family. I think Jeff explained it best in saying, “You don’t get a tattoo for thirty years down the road. You get it for the moment.”
