Culture, camaraderie, and combined efforts are just a few things that come to mind when First Officer Rob Vos thinks about Southwest Airlines. Rob joined the Southwest Family eight years ago, and he has more than 30 years of flying experience.
On his first day at Southwest, Rob noticed that there was something different about the Company. “The Culture is definitely what sets Southwest apart,” Rob says. He gives a lot of thanks to his management for leading by example, and he firmly believes in the pay-it-forward philosophy, which he puts into action by organizing an annual lunch for his Fellow Employees at the Norfolk Station as a way of thanking them for all their hard work and service. Since he started with the Company, Rob has commuted weekly from his hometown of Norfolk to Baltimore/Washington and has fostered great friendships with the Norfolk Station Employees.
Just as Rob LUVs his job as a First Officer, he also LUVs what the job does for him. Southwest affords Rob opportunities to do things he enjoys outside of work, like fishing, golfing, and spending time with his wife of 30 years and their two daughters. He is grateful for his travel privileges, which allow his daughter Abby to fly back and forth from graduate school, and he also appreciates the “Freedom to think outside the box” that his supportive management gives their Team. “We all take care of each other with the ultimate goal of taking care of our Customers,” Rob says.
“Rob is one of the best folks we have,” Baltimore/ Washington Chief Pilot Bert Seither says. It comes as no surprise to us, Rob, that you were named Star of the Month. We are so lucky to have you on our Team. Your nonstop commitment to Southwest has not gone unnoticed, and we couldn’t be prouder of you!

A.J. Davis might look familiar to you. He’s a Southwest Airlines Pilot, and he might even be flying your plane right now! A.J., a Baltimore/Washington–based First Officer, joined the Southwest Family six years ago. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Navy for more than 22 years. In the fall of 2011, A.J.’s Servant’s Heart won him Southwest’s Winning Spirit Award, which is given to Employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. For A.J., this involved taking time during an overnight layover to build an access ramp for a Customer’s quadriplegic brother. This gesture allowed the Customer’s brother to get his mobility back and have full access around his house. Outside of work, A.J. LUVs to spend quality time with his family and is actively involved in his son’s Boy Scout troop. A.J. realized just how important his family was when it was threatened five years ago. His son, Logan, was diagnosed at age 7 with a very aggressive form of cancer. A.J. is thankful for the travel benefits Southwest gives him and his family and recognizes that without them Logan wouldn’t have been able to see the best doctors in the country. He is forever grateful for his Southwest Family and all of the LUV and support he and his family have received over the past five years. “My Southwest Family is always there, willing to help, whether or not I ask for it,” he says. Fortunately, after battling cancer and kidney failure, Logan is now cancer-free and recovering. If you ever have the pleasure of meeting A.J., you’ll find that his great stories and dry sense of humor will make you laugh and keep a smile on your face. On a serious note, A.J., you are truly an asset to our Company. We salute you and your continued hard work, dedication, and nonstop commitment to Southwest—and we are fortunate to have you as part of our Family.—Brandi DeWaters
