At the heart of Southwest Airlines is a Warrior Spirit, and there's a little bit of Herb Kelleher's entrepeneurial Spirit in each of us. After all, the LUV Airline was long an underdog that started out with three planes, then overcame the Wright Amendment, and is about to start flying across international waters.
But in San Antonio, there's a little known secret; less grandioso than the aforementioned "big picture" ideas, but just as important. There's another Herb that walks among us. He is Herb Watts, or "Herb from the Curb," a San Antonio Skycap who has been working at Southwest for nearly two decades.
This tale of two Herbs has one commonality... well, maybe two. One is that entrepreneurial Spirit I mentioned earlier. The other is the LUV of some good brisket, and BBQ sauce to go with it. Herb from the Curb makes a BBQ sauce of the same name, endorsed by Southwest Founder Herbert D. Kelleher himself.
Recently, at an Employee Appreciation Day in San Antonio, money was raised to support Herb from the Curb, and also Southwest's Employee Catastrophic Fund, which helps Southwest individuals who are in times of need due to unfortunate events in their lives.
