Cancer is a rough, rough road, and I recently learned that caregivers are met not only on that road, but also in the sky. In May 2005, I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called mantle cell lymphoma. A terminal diagnosis coupled with a 1,200 mile journey to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in hope of staying alive is a challenge. During this time, Southwest Employees became a valuable part of my caregiving team.

Harvey 4.JPG

Once we felt the full impact of Hurricane Harvey, it was apparent no planes would be taking off from Houston Hobby anytime soon. I have never seen so much rain or the lightning and tornadoes that accompanied it. Meanwhile, Southwest had been working around the clock to get us out of Houston. When a brief break in the heavy rain occurred around mid-afternoon on Saturday, Southwest managed to evacuate 500-600 Passengers. Thanks to Southwest it was not the nightmare it could have been.

Eclipse 2017 Onboard Flight 1368, Portland to St. LouisEclipse 2017 Onboard Flight 1368, Portland to St. Louis

Watching a total eclipse of the sun is, typically, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We're here to tell you what it was like, with as many pictures as we can.

Meet Challenger. Not only is he an American bald eagle—and quite possibly the most famous eagle in the world—he’s one of Southwest Airlines’ most frequent flyers. You may have even been onboard one of Challenger’s Southwest flights. Due to our special relationship with the American Eagle Foundation, Challenger has traveled on nearly 51 one-way flights since 2016.

Intern Blog Mackenzie 2.jpg

It’s been nearly 11 weeks since I started as the Knowledge Management Intern in the Customer Relations/Rapid Rewards Department here at Southwest Airlines. Throughout the past three months, I have traveled to eight cities (and numerous others if you count every connection), met some of the best People, and truly learned what it means to Live and Work The Southwest Way. Working at Southwest Airlines has taught me the value of loving what you do and who you do it for—a takeaway that will stay with me forever.

Our Southwest story began more than 50 years ago in San Antonio when southwest Co-Founders Herb Kelleher and Rollin King first sat down to discuss the “crazy” idea of starting an airline. Since then, our Company not only survived, but became the envy of just about every other airline out there. It’s a story worth keeping track of, and that’s exactly what we do within our Corporate Archive at Southwest's Headquarters in Dallas.
