The Southwest Heart is about loving people, building resilience, and living responsibly. Whether it’s through a Companywide initiative or on an individual basis, our Employees extend their Hearts in service—they create community wherever they are by volunteering time, talent, and Heart to make a difference.
While sitting on a recent Southwest Airlines flight, I got to talking with a kind man next to me—we talked about what we did for a living and I mentioned how passionate I am about teaching. He then asked me what the greatest challenge was that I’ve ever faced in my career. I was honest, and told him that working at a low income school can be heartbreaking—then, something amazing happened.
We’re often asked if Campus Reach Interns are ever hired for full-time employment after their internship. Our answer: we love hiring Interns! The Campus Reach Program has built a talent acquisition pipeline here at Southwest, so you will see many of our former Interns roaming the hallways now as full-time Southwest Employees.
At Southwest Airlines, we always strive to make traveling easier for our Customers. Recently, our mobile website and apps have undergone a few improvements that will make everything from your trip, arriving at the airport, and boarding easier. As of August 1, Southwest Airlines will no longer serve peanuts onboard and will instead serve pretzels on all flights. This decision wasn’t made lightly, but in the interest of providing the best Hospitality and a welcoming and safe onboard environment for Customers with peanut or peanut-dust allergies, we felt it was the right thing to do.

Ah, summertime. Three things are guaranteed each summer: one, HEAT! Two, full flights. And three, Network Planning publishes the January schedule. That happened this morning, extending our schedule out through March 6, 2019. Some interesting changes to our schedule always await as we move from the holiday season schedule into the heart of winter of the new year, and this one’s no exception. Let’s discuss!
Our fourth annual Southwest Summer Camp is underway, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome over 160 campers (who are dependents of Southwest Employees) to our Headquarters this week! Additionally, we are hosting a few students from GenHERation and a few students whose nationally-recognized science experiment was sent to space. Most of these campers aren’t of legal voting age yet, but they just might be future Southwest Employees. In fact, that’s kind of the point.
Twice a year, Southwest Airlines organizes a companywide initiative that encourages Employees to come together and spend time volunteering in their local communities. During this year’s spring companywide initiative, hundreds of Employees put their Hearts in Action and participated in more than 70 projects across the system.
To help us create impact and make this volunteer event a success, we teamed up with one of our sustainability partners, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to bring conservation projects to cities across the country.
At Southwest Airlines, our Purpose is to connect People to what’s important in their lives. We know our Customers and Employees are passionate about music, and we love to support up-and-coming musicians throughout their journeys. We combine these passions through Live at 35, our inflight concert series that brings artists onboard to perform live at 35,000 feet. Check out our most recent Live at 35 performer, Australian-born rising country artist Morgan Evans.
Whether you’ve been the parent or the innocent bystander, you’ve probably encountered a child at some point during your airline travels. Oftentimes, traveling children can become impatient, frustrated, or confused during the travel process. The trick to traveling with children is to bring food, entertainment, and mostly luck, because let’s face it—children are unpredictable.
We know you have seen the headlines about children being separated from their parents, and many of you have asked if Southwest is engaging on this important topic. Please rest assured that Southwest Airlines is a Company that cares deeply about our People and the People we serve. As such, we issued the following statement.
On May 21, Southwest Airlines welcomed 162 new Interns to the Southwest Family. As the Marketing Department Operations and Planning Intern, I am fortunate to be one of the Interns selected to participate in the Campus Reach program. At Southwest Airlines, we love to inspire future generations to succeed, and one of the many ways we do that is through our Adopt-A-Pilot program. Since 1997, our Pilots have dedicated their own time to help students define, articulate, and plan for future success; all while enjoying fun-filled lessons! But for these father-son duos, this program has become more than fun—it’s become a family legacy.
Since 2013, the Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community program, in partnership with Project for Public Spaces, has awarded more than $3.6 million in grants and placemaking technical assistance to 20 organizations across the U.S. and Mexico City to transform their public spaces into thriving community gathering places.

Southwest’s Campus Reach Team identifies and engages future Southwest Employees at an early age to hopefully inspire an interest in a career in aviation. Recently, we had the opportunity to host a special group of students at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston after Houston ABC Channel 13’s Foti Kallergis reached out to us.
My daughter’s high school robotics team competed at the World Championship in Houston recently, and they specifically chose to leave competition early so they would be home in time to celebrate their Senior Prom. All was going according to plan and spirits were high until they learned that their flight had a five hour delay which would put them home mere minutes before prom was to begin. Would senior prom be ruined? Not a chance with Southwest!
