Our Heart helps us connect People to what's important in their lives, which is why we are proud to partner with Knights of Heroes, a camp for sons and daughters of fallen soldiers. Learn more about how you can join in supporting other deserving children’s charities during our annual LUV Classic & Party!
At Southwest Airlines, we’re focused on connecting People and championing community. We have a long history of giving back, which is evident in our dedication to the places where our Customers live and work.
To continue this commitment, we’re excited to share the launch of a $1 million charitable grant program to support innovative nonprofit organizations across the United States. This exciting grant will provide us the opportunity to further invest in the careers and workforces of tomorrow!
For many of the communities Southwest Airlines serves, 2017 was a challenging year. Several places we love were impacted by natural disasters—one of the areas most impacted was Tapachula, Chiapas. People living in this area supply some of the coffee beans utilized by Community Coffee Company, our onboard partner that provides our inflight coffee. At Southwest, disaster preparedness and response is one of the core pillars of our community outreach efforts, and we are honored to play a role as the people of Tapachula rebuild.
In 2017, we announced our partnership with Mexican fashion designer Carla Fernández. To create these incredible products, Carla Fernández worked with artisans in seven different communities throughout Mexico who specialize in creating textile and embroidery designs and handcrafts that preserve the country’s rich cultural heritage. Southwest Airlines is proud to celebrate LUV Seat: Mexico during Hispanic Heritage Month and all throughout the year as a part of our Repurpose with Purpose program.
Travel this week to many of our East Coast destinations as well as Punta Cana and San Juan, Puerto Rico may be affected by Hurricane Florence and Tropical Storm Isaac.

A letter from Herb Kelleher more than 20 years ago began my involvement with the Southwest LUV Classic & Party. The passion for the event, which benefits children’s charities, grew for my colleagues and me over the years—we went from simply golfing in the tournament to becoming sponsors so that we could invest directly! Two years ago, our connection to the Southwest LUV Classic & Party and one of this year’s recipients, the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), grew even stronger.

In October 2017, Southwest added the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to our fleet family. This aircraft allows us to enhance our Customer Experience through a music-infused cabin experience featuring playlists for boarding and deplaning. Songs in the playlist are categorized and played onboard according to the time of day and respective mood. Read more to learn how we curate this experience, our current playlist available now, and share your favorite song with us!
Twelve flights in 13 weeks sounds like a completely reasonable amount of trips to many of our most frequent-flying Customers and Crew, but as a first-time expecting mom I found myself losing the internal willpower battle to make it through my packed few weeks on the move—all while fighting the symptoms that often come with the first signs of pregnancy. [Insert green, nausea face emoji!].
Fortunately, I have a great network of Coworkers at Southwest that happen to also be moms, so I began reaching out to them in confidence begging for them to bestow their wisdom on me. Read more to see what I learned.
With kids across the country heading back to school, it may be tough to start thinking about Spring Break; although, we know you’re already planning ahead. Now that Southwest’s schedule has been extended through April 7, 2019, it’s time to get a head start on those plans! Grab some sunscreen (and your passport!) and let’s dig into some of the exciting changes next spring.
My husband, two sons, and I have been loyal Southwest fans for many years. Southwest's many advantages have benefitted our family in countless ways—but my personal favorite benefit is the Companion Pass. Read more to learn how our Southwest story shaped the college experience for my family and helped us travel the country together.
One of the things I enjoy about my career at Southwest Airlines is endless opportunities for learning and growth. I am proud to be a participant in one of these transformative opportunities, the Manager in Training Program (MIT), a dynamic learning experience for top-performing Managers, Supervisors, and Team Leaders. I’ve enjoyed every aspect of the program, but the Servant’s Heart project is something I’m especially proud to have been a part of.
Family travel is not for the faint of heart. Knowing the resources that are available to you at the airport—from mother’s rooms to pods to family restrooms—can help reduce some stress, so we’ve compiled family resources for every location Southwest serves.
As Southwest Airlines celebrates the one-year anniversary of the Great American Eclipse, we look back on an experience that our Customer, Photographer Jon Carmichael, had onboard one of our special eclipse flights from Portland to St. Louis on August 21, 2017.
We introduced our EarlyBird product in 2009, and we’ve seen the popularity of the product increase with our Customers every year. With EarlyBird, we’ll automatically check you in and assign your boarding position within 36 hours of your flight’s departure—12 hours before general boarding positions become available.
Until now, the price for EarlyBird has been a flat rate for all routes—starting at $10 in 2009, and is currently $15. Beginning August 29, we are moving to a variable pricing structure with three price points: $15, $20, and $25. Read more for additional details on the changes to our EarlyBird pricing model.
My friend Laura and I went to Napa Valley for a girls trip and one last hurrah before her July wedding to her boyfriend of nine years—a true fairytale romance!
Since Laura and I needed to be at the rehearsal as the bride-to-be and bridesmaid, our plan was to return the following day, which was the night before the wedding. We would land and go immediately from the airport to her rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. However, while in California, we monitored the weather and noticed that there were storms rolling in, and worried that if we didn’t come home early, we might not make the rehearsal or even the wedding.
When our founder launched FlightAware in 2005, he wanted to provide a tool for fellow pilots and AV geeks to track live flights (at the time, there was no publicly available way of doing so). I don’t think he ever guessed 12 years later, we would be tracking sharks on our maps—but that’s exactly what happened when we partnered with Southwest Airlines to help promote Shark Week!
Starting September 17, Southwest Airlines will have updated policies that will affect our Customers who travel with an emotional support animal or trained service animal. We hope these changes give our Customers clearer guidelines about the types of animals that can travel on our planes. Read more to learn addiitonal details about these updated policies.
Ever since my obsession with the show Big Little Lies started, Monterey has been calling my name. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of joining the #SouthwestStorytellers team, so when a friend told me he was celebrating his birthday there it seemed like the perfect getaway.
During our short weekend stay, we were able to cover a lot of ground both in and around the city and discover some of the most scenic areas in California. Read more for my list of top five places to check out the next time you make it to this special part of the golden coast.
It’s no secret Southwest Airlines is dedicated to the People and communities we serve. We love to give back and one of the many ways we do this is through our Medical Transportation Grant Program. Since the program’s inception in 2007, we have donated more than 69,000 tickets to nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations for use by patients and caregivers in need of travel assistance.
Southwest is known for its Company Culture. It’s often imitated, and never duplicated. Did you know that we also have a Culture Services Department that is charged with championing a Culture through which every Employee knows they matter? As Interns on that Team, Emily and I focus specifically on large-scale Employee appreciation events, including our recent Culture Blitz in Houston.
Southwest’s Emerging Leader Development Program (ELDP) is an 18-month job rotational program that seeks to train and develop excellent frontline and operational Leaders for Southwest Airlines. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are placed in a Leadership role anywhere in the Southwest system, based on business need. Read on to hear firsthand from a recent participant of the program! Interested applicants are encouraged to apply now through August 19.
On the first day of Intern Orientation, I sat next to a fellow Intern with my same last name. After discovering our shared surname, I joked with him that while I already have a twin sister, he could be our triplet. “Actually,” he responded, “I am a triplet.”
With it being National Twin Day today, it seems fitting to acknowledge this unique trend among our Intern class. Below is a quick look at some of the summer 2018 Interns with their multiples. While our siblings aren’t interning with us, all of the Interns have become a Family.
I'd like to give a big thanks to Southwest. Recently, my 7-year-old and 8-year-old flew by themselves for the first time. I chose Southwest to be the provider of that experience because truthfully, it seems to be the only airline left where the Employees actually enjoy their job and interacting with Customers.
While any parent would be nervous about leaving their kids alone to fly, I had faith that Southwest would not only deliver my children safely, but do it with care. So, my expectations were not low for this experience— yet you still managed to exceed them.
