SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ENTER INTO SLOT LEASE AT NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (EWR)

DALLAS—Aug. 27, 2010—Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines confirmed today that they entered into a lease providing Southwest Airlines access to 36 Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) slots which are currently held by Continental.

The lease deal, contingent upon the closing of the Continental and United airlines’ merger by Nov. 30, 2010, and certain governmental approvals, would give Southwest Airlines the right to operate up to 18 daily roundtrip flights at Newark, New Jersey, with some flights beginning in March 2011 and a full schedule in place by June 2011. The slots are spread throughout the day and would allow Southwest the ability to integrate Newark service conveniently into its extensive national route network.

“We are excited by the opportunity to initiate service from Newark, New Jersey, and we plan to enable that service starting next March through continued flight schedule optimization using our existing fleet,” said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning. “We’ve seen tremendous demand for Southwest Airlines in the New York City/Newark area in the past year.  Customers are clamoring for our unique brand of hospitality, great value, low fares, extensive flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver outstanding Customer Service. Adding Newark provides an excellent complement to our LaGuardia and Long Island service, giving Customers one more option for travel to and from the greater New York City/New Jersey area. This service also will provide a needed injection of low fares and competition into the New York/Newark market.”

Southwest is working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Continental and United Airlines to finalize arrangements for commencing its Newark service in March 2011, including the approval of the acquisition of the necessary airport gates and facilities.  Details on what cities Southwest will serve from Newark and on what dates that service will begin have not yet been determined.

“The divestiture of slots at Newark by the combined Continental/United will ensure competition is enhanced, and we appreciate the Department of Justice’s role in finding a fair solution,” Jordan said.

After 39 years of service, Southwest Airlines continues to differentiate itself from other low-fare carriers—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service.  Southwest Airlines is the nation's largest carrier in terms of originating domestic passengers boarded and currently serves 69 cities in 35 states. Southwest also is one of the most honored airlines in the world, known for its commitment to the triple bottom line of Performance, People, and Planet. To read more about how Southwest is doing its part to be a good citizen, visit southwest.com/cares to read the Southwest Airlines One Report™.  Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has nearly 35,000 Employees systemwide.  When shopping for Southwest online, it's important to know that Southwest Airlines’ low fares are only available at http://www.southwest.com/?src=PREMNASEWRANNOUNC100827.

This news release contains forward-looking statements related to Southwest’s lease of slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and its related plans and expectations. Hooray! I'm so happy this is happening! I live in Chicago and fly back home to northern NJ through LaGuardia airport at least twice per year. Now it will be a lot easier and faster to fly to Newark! Southwest, thank you very much for continually providing me with great airline experiences. I'm sure to stay a loyal customer for life!

I fly from Houston Hobby (20 minutes away) into Newark 3 or 4 times a year, and another choice (other than Delta) would be fantastic! But wait, I would give up the joy of a plane change in Atlanta, with transfer times of 30 minutes (heart pounding) to 3 hours (heart stopping). Proud owner (small) and a fan of Southwest.

Congratulations ! Great News!! Hope you will consider putting Sacramento, Ca at the top of your list for direct service to Newark. We will have our new , expanded, and fabulous terminal ready by then.We really need you to provide more of your great service to the East Coast. Looking forward to bigger and better days ahead. Thank you !! Hillard, Stockton, Ca

We travel in the summer in the WY, MT ND and SD area. We usually fly into Denver and then drive north. Southwest really needs to get into either Rapid City, SD or Billings, MT. While I am happy that SWA is getting into Newark, SWA is already in 5 other airports within 1-4 hours of Newark. And i agree on the Charleston also.

Congrats SWA - You're just a few weeks off since I fly out tomorrow for Newark. Sooooo disappointed I have to use other airlines that just don't come close to your service. Your willingness to reach out to your loyal passengers is indicative of your commitment to keeping SWA a favorite airline for many of us. We all would like non-stop flights back east and to other areas. Looks like we just have to patient knowing you have our interests at heart. Now, take away the 4 hour flights to San Jose when from Reno it's only 50 minutes. Used to have a great flight that left around 4:30; much better for the frequent biz travelers. Thanks for flying higher than any other airline!

Please add a direct flight from BHM to EWR when you start your service to EWR. People of Alabama will greatly appreciate that. Thanks. Meckin

Now Southwest needs to let people RESERVE a seat instead of having to play musical chairs in Groups A,B, & C to scramble for a seat.

FINALLY! Hey Southwest, how about picking up the Newark-Melbourne, Fl. route that Air America wanted to do? There is a GREAT need to service the Treasure Coast and if they had gotten slots it would have been a done deal! LOVE Southwest and hope Florida trips are in my future!!!

I cheered when I read this press release! I already love Southwest for their easy, convenient, cheap flights from Boise to Seattle. My best friend lives close to Newark and I like to visit her at least once a year. I realize that a non-stop from Boise to Newark probably isn't going to happen, but the fact that I can fly into Jersey instead of La Guardia is huge to me! It will save hours of travel time in the end. Thank you Southwest!

Yes!!! My husband and I fly from Sacramento at least a half-dozen times a year to see family and friends in NY/NJ and the option to fly SWA to EWR instead of taking JetBlue to JFK or Frontier to LaGuardia is terrific. A driect flight from Sacramento would be the icing on the cake!

FANTASTIC! We hope you will fly to Newark from both Jackson, MS(JAN), the Capitol of MS, and from Manchester, NH(MHT).".the OTHER Boston airport," which are both great airports for Seniors to go into and out of to get to Newark to make an easy International connection.

This is sooo GREAT. I fly faithfully with SOUTHWEST when I fly for business and pleasure. The only place that I fly for work is Atlanta Ga that you do not have flights for and have to use one of those other carriers ughhhhhhhh. I wish you would go to Atlanta or some other town close enough to Atlanta so that i can say I am faithfully yours!!! I use to drive all the way to Islip to fly you guys from NJ. Then when you opened at Laguardia I was wooo hooo so much closer of a drive for me. Wow I cannot believe now in Newark, Im so excited now I dont have to drive at all and just take a cab over to the airport. I appreciate also the way you and your employees treat oversized passengers as myself. Although you require us to purchase 2 seats for our flight it is so understandable that people of size purchase 2 seats, first it is more comfortable for yourself and secondly everyone has their own space. I would never want to be a burden on someone else or make anyone else uncomfortable because I am of size and wouldnt like that to happen to me either. You also have a great policy in place that if your planes are not full you refund the second seat of the oversized passenger. I think all airlines should adhere to that policy. It is great that you treat people with disabilities special since we are. I use to hate flying because people are so mean in general they would look at you and whisper to each other boy I hope she doesnt sit by me but the passengers that fly on southwest usually know your policy of people of size therefore I dont hear that as much because they know we are purchasing 2 seats and wouldnt be a burden on them. People still stare at me when they walk by my seats but its okay i just smile at them and they move on. I couldnt believe the negative publicity you got from that actor and his disgust in your policy but it is what it is and if he was of size then actor or no actor he should have paid for his extra seat or fly someone else and pay for a first class seat which is roomier. Your employees are the best out there in the airline industry. They are nice, curtious, and also funny. I love when they have a sense of humor on the intercom and make everyone giggle and laugh it puts so many passengers comfortable and at ease when flying. Thanks for the great customer service. You will ALWAYS have my business. Get to Atlanta!!! Your loyal customer. Mary

We live in Phoenix and always book our trips to Europe out of Newark to rest along the way. We will now be able to use our favorite Domestic Airline to get to Newark from Sky Harbor. This was "music" to our ears.

You should consider ACY (Atlantic City Airport) in NJ as well. It is an up and coming Airport that just expanded. Spirit runs there but does not do a very good job. ACY service to LAS was always full and they discontinued it. It would be a great addition to an already wide coverage area for SWA Check it out!!!!!!!!!!!

I have wanted to fly southwest every time I have to fly out of Newark and this announcement just made my day. Southwest is by far the most polite, most on time, no hassle airline, and I love you guys for it! Keep up the great work! All of my waiting paid off 🙂

Please consider add SWA Hub in Washington DC at the Ronald Regan Airport. Since the other couple low carrier airlines are Jetblue and AirTran Airways already hub at DCA Airport. That will be great if SWA can be consider add new nonstop flights in DCA. A lot of Metro Resident in DC, VA, MD will be a lot of happy if the SWA will be add to DCA Airport. It is easier hop on ride Metro Subway to the DCA Airport at this time.

I have been a Southwest fan, since my first flight in the 70's in the days of the "Love Airlines"....when all passengers received the pin with the heart...and of course the Mini skirts!!!! Originally, as I recall my flights were from Love field to either Brownsville or Houston. Over the years I always used SWA when ever possible both for business and pleasure. In all those years, I have never had anything but excellent service, help and special consideration when necessary. At one point my daughter was diagnosed with Meningitis while we were in San Antonio for her brothers Air Force Basic graduation...we were delayed by hospitalization, problems with recovery etc. Even though we had the special tickets..you people worked with us on rescheduling, help through the airports as well as assistance and special consideration on the flights!! Even though we had readily agreed to extra charges for the changes, we never received them after you became aware of the reasons. Thank you again...congratulations on your further expansion. An Interesting situation s developing in our family...our daughter now 20 is seriously considering a career with SWA, beginning as a stewardess and then moving a position to take advantage of her business degree. Thank you again...We support you 100%

How about Newark, Boston, or LGA to MYR(Myrtle Beach). There are thousands of Yankees dying to play golf and enjoy the beaches. Spirit is a monopoly, often inconvenient.

This expansion will come at someone's expense, given that SWA is not purchasing any new aircraft. Nashville is experiencing a loss of non-stops to the west coast. My beloved non-stop to Ontario is gone. Denver's getting more flights. I predict that these 18 departures out of Newark will go as follows: 2 to Chicago 2 to Washington Dulles 2 to Denver 2 to Phoenix 2 to Las Vegas 2 to Orlando 1 to West Palm Beach 2 to Ft. Lauderdale 2 to Tampa 1 to Nashville

Great news. Congratulations. I'm in agreement with Nancy L. - a direct connection with ALB/Albany, NY. The international flight I'm considering for next year only departs from EWR or Boston/Logan. Direct flights to both those areas would be absolutely wonderful.

It sure would be great if you would go back to having a non-stop from Jax. Fl. to Indpls again..I know that since you've did away with that, I haven't flown to Indiana since...even if you just did it once a month, I'm a senior and I sure would love to travel there again..Thanks..Doris P.

There goes Southwest's vaunted ontime departure and arrival record. EWR is probably one of the worst airports in the world for on-ground and approach traffic management!

This is excellent news! Newark-Denver fares have been SO SO SO high since continental and united became partners. I cant wait for SW to enter EWR-DEN and save us all money! Hail southwest you are the best airline ever! Free us from the ridiculously high fares currently on EWR-DEN with NO competition.

This is very exciting for your Southwest customers in this region to be in Newark. Look into partnering with Continental in continuing to offer a shuttle bus to Newark from Lehigh Valley International Airport as Continental has been offering customers who don't want to drive to Newark.
