Southwest Airlines and the Chalk Art of Denver

This guest post is from Erika Sauerwein, the Marketing and Public Relations Manager for Larimer Square in Denver.

Chalk artists spend hours on their hands and knees creating masterpieces on the concrete, all while knowing it will soon be washed away. It’s not easy. The pavement is rough on their hands. The sun is relentless, the back often hurts and the knees take a beating. But our artists love it. You might as well call us Chaulk Norris--we kick butt at chalk art.

This week was no different. We made national news earlier this week by creating chalk art on the ramps between gates at the Denver International Airport (DIA) on Wednesday. Our artists worked closely with DIA and Southwest Airlines to create a truly unique opportunity for airport passengers and employees. Not to mention a once in a lifetime opportunity for us and our artists! How many people can say they created chalk art near an international airport runway!

We created two beautiful art pieces that day. One was designed and created by our artists from the Larimer Arts Association. The artwork was outlined by Corbin Hillam, a Colorado Springs artist. The group wanted to create something that screamed local and Denver unique and tied into our amazing location on the ramps at DIA.

The second piece was a collaborative effort between Larimer Arts Association artists, Southwest employees and a few Delta employees.

What an amazing day! Check out the photos and video from the day. But this is only the beginning, as 200+ artists will join us on Larimer Square this weekend for the Eighth annual Denver Chalk Art Festival. The Square will be turned into a museum of chalk art. You won’t want to miss it! Read more about the event here. Thank you Southwest for being such an amazing partner for us.
