Everyone talks about how busy the airports will be during the holidays. During the rest of the years, most flight are full. I am wondering where the the airlines get the extra planes, crews and gate slots to get more planes in and out of the airports during the holidays.

There are no "extra" planes or gates, same number of planes and gates as always, but schedules and number of flights to/from destinations are adjusted to create space on busier routes while reducing capacity on other routes that may normally be more utilized by businesses travelers who are not flying. It's quite amazing work to adjust such a large operation to meet the unique demands of holiday travel.
