Rapid Rewards was a hero when I really needed it.
A few years ago my dad died in quite sudden and difficult circumstances - suicide at New Year's Eve. I needed to fly back and forth to where he lived, a different state to where I lived, and the role Rapid Rewards played was essential. It allowed me to fly my ex-wife, and a friend, to his funeral. RR also enabled me to make more visits than normally would have been financially ideal but really needed to happen (given the aforementioned difficult nature of his death). I know I had earned these reawards in a rational sense, but the emotional value they provided (and how easy it was to use them - the usual helpful and cheerful SWA people) was invaluable.
