Why are points so expensive to purchase?

A flight that cost $145 = just over 8,000 points. But if I were to actually purchase 8,000 points I would have to pay $220. What?

The option to purchase points is meant to be a way to top off your account with the last few points you might need to book a flight with points, not a method to get all the points needed for a flight. For example, I need 12,000 points for a flight, but only have 10,000 points in my account. Purchasing the additional 2,000 points for $60 may be a better option than paying the whole fare, approximately $180.

The third party points.com operates the points sales and transfer function as a profit center for Southwest.
