On my flight, I am restricted to one carry-on. I am traveling with a travel group. They recommend my carry-on to be a backback. I also have a small purse I want to bring, but I don't want that to be the carry-on item. Can I bring the purse on the flight without that being my one item?

You are allowed a carry on and a personal item. So your backpack would be your carry on and your purse would be the personal item. You shouldn't have any problems taking both on the flight, as long as one will fit under the seat in front of you.
