It never fails. I get so busy inbooking flights I enevitably forget to sign up for mobile alerts (i.e., flight delays, gate changes) and when I go back into the website to sign up, I am hunting for hours to find it!

Actually, you no longer will be able to sign up for alerts -- Southwest is discontinuing that service.
However: If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you should* be contacted automatically via the method you choose when booking. Be sure to double-check that you have text notification selected and that your phone number is entered correctly, and you should be all set!
*Full disclosure: I've had wildly varying success with Southwest's flight notifications. I've found it pays to be proactive and check flight status myself, just in case.
