Can baseball bats be carried on the plane if they are packaged in a sealed box? My boys just got a new wood bat in Cooperstown NY and need to get them home to California. Thanks!

No, as per TSA baseball bats must be checked. Go to the TSA "What Can I Bring?" page then search for bat, this is what is there now:
"Baseball Bats
- Carry On Bags: No
- Checked Bags: Yes
Sports equipment that can be used as a bludgeon (such as bats and clubs) is prohibited in the cabin of the plane and must be transported in your checked baggage."
