Hello. I don't know of a way of adding a person to an existing itinerary, so just go ahead and buy a new ticket that will have it's own itinerary.

As he will be on a separate reservation you'll be asked to provide the confirmation number and name of an adult that will be accompanying him when you purchase his ticket. You'll also need to check him in separately from when you check yourself in. Remember, you will both have to board at the higher/worst boarding position of the two of you.
If the fare is the same as when you purchased your ticket you could cancel your reservation and apply the travel funds towards the purchase of a reservation with both you and your son on it. That eliminates the separate check-in issue.
