If looking to capitalize on points and if able to afford to put expense on two cards, you can each apply for one separately and add the other; My husband and I each have our own, but then add one another on them. Depends on what your goals are and what offers are out there.

I do try to get on single reservation when I can but do agree about linking an entire party; I frequently purchase different fare types for family members (dollars, points, IWG bs IWG+) and you can only link the minors, I have sent many requests to SW to be able to either book different fare types on one reservation or to link reservations other than minors

Don't you have to link the reservations to an adult or put them on a single reservation? Are the boarding numbers still a big gap? When I have had to link a child to an adult (even at 16) they were sequential. I haven't done it in a bit so not sure if that is still the same.

When you booked the room, did it say it was refundable and they wouldn't refund it, or did it say that it was not refundable? I know when I have booked I am very careful to make sure to book refundable rooms, even if it costs a bit more. So far for me, it has been very clear on their website if it is or not. I always compare it to the hotel prices directly. More often than not, the refundable rate through SW hotels is cheaper than the non refundable rate through the hotel directly. I do make sure to write down all my rooms and the cancel date in a spreadsheet so I don't miss any cancel dates and to make sure I have the booking ID. So far I have not had any issues. If it were not for the points you earn toward companion fare, I probably would be booking with the hotel directly just because you earn hotel points and status, and it is all in one place; However, I don't think hotels are any more flexible if you book a non-refundable with them directly and as of today I have already earned companion fare for 2025 with the points I have received through hotel bookings.

Interesting, those are not the discounts I am offered. I am consistently offered $10 off per 1000 (in various ranges) In addition, I logged onto mine, my husbands and my daughters accounts and looked at the same flight on same day in each. My husband and I both had offers for $10 off per 1000, while my daughter had the same exchange rate as your pic. None of which are worth it to me. Wonder what criteria they are using to determine what exchange rate is used.

You will earn companion pass after the statement that you have earned your $4K has closed and posted to your rapid reward account. Those points typically post a day or two after the statement closed. So for example if you earn the $4k by May 12th, but your statement closes on May 31st, you would likely see it in your account on Jun 1 or 2nd. You can go ahead and book any flight and add the companion pass later. I don't recall though, did this promotion have a specific time period for companion pass? I recall some promotions the companion pass was only good for specific months. If this is the case you may not see companion pass until that time period, I have not had experience with this situation so someone else may be able to advise you better.

I now see it in both the app and on line. I had really hoped the cash plus points option would proves a way to book cash and reward options (or different fare types) on the same reservation but doesn’t appear to be any new functionality such as, bummer. All the fan fare for much to do about nothing.

For my family, the two top factors are the companion fare and the flexibility. We travel very frequently for basketball tournaments and college basketball games where we may know the date of a tournament well in advance, but not the times or have a date and it changes drastically. We may not know the times until the day of traveling. The ability to add my child as a companion and to change our flights once we have the schedule has been a game changer, we would not be able to afford to travel as often. When we do travel we would be stuck in airports much longer without the flexibility. Any time we have had issues with schedules or delays the Southwest customer service has always provided an easy, equitable solution either rebooking or some compensation. This is even when the delay is due to weather or some other event out of their control. We just would not be able to do what we do as a family without SW.

I agree, unfortunately this was said in the context of finding new revenue streams. I use to be a long time Alaska flier years ago, now when I fly Alaska I don’t like the policies, they block out most seats to drive prices up and over all that pricing structure isn’t transparent and is inflexible.

Yes it is for any fare as long as there is an open seat.
Yes it is for any flight from same starting and ending destination even if that means a connection
Yes most definitely check in just in case you aren’t able to change, you want to get the best seat possible
note if you do a same day change you lose the seating position of the flight you are on and get a new one based on what is available when you change so check in to the changed flight as soon as possible too.

I believe it was on all flights. You have to select points purchase, then when you go to pay, where you would normally see where you would put in flight credits or gift cards, it now says Cash + Points and other forms of payment and when you select that you see a list of 5 different amounts of points and how man $ off for those points. Looks like it is $10 off per 1000. I also saw this with Hotel purchase, could do points plus cash.

I was pointing out that sometimes, a person of size looks like they are saving a seat when they have actually purchased two. There isn't a way to know that. I have been seated in a row with such situation and the person was harassed by someone who wanted the middle seat next to them.

As an example, I just purchased a flight that was $109. If I were to use the points only it would have been 6515 points for the entire flight. Points plus cash was 4000 points to take off 40 and still owed another $69, plus you don't earn toward A-Status or companion fare. They pre-determine how many points you can use toward the flight and give 4 option I think it was.

I have seen the flight attendant, especially in the exit row, enforce no saving, However I do believe there are cases where people of size purchase two seats and are allowed that 2nd seat. This likely isn’t the case you ran into but something to be aware of and show some grace.

It is typically given a couple days after the statement end date in the period you spent the qualified $. So if it took you 5 weeks that is likely 2 periods and would get it at the closing of the 2nd period, which may be another 2-3 weeks. I don’t know if this timing has changed with the volume of people signing up. In the mean time, if you have a flight to take after that closing date you can book it and add the companion later.

Looks like SW is starting to roll out the points plus cash option to a limited number of people. The initial exchange for points does not look appealing and wonder what the purpose of it even is except to maybe provide an option for infrequent travelers who have very limited points a way to use them. I hope that the exchange isn't what will be reflected when using full points to book a flight.

For some reason, recently, the extra points are not showing up when I search hotels on the web when logged into my account; However, when I search for them in the southwest app, the prices are cheaper and they also have bonus points. This seems to be some recent change, I don't know if anyone else has experienced this.

Did you cancel the flight? You have to cancel the flight at least 10 min before departure to be able to get credit or for points to be refunded.

Do you know what type of fare it was? If it was an I wanna get away plus or higher the credit can be transferred to another rapid reward member at no charge; If it is an I wanna get away, the easiest way to transfer it is to purchase an I wanna get away plus fare for the same amount using the credit, the cancel the reservation now making it a transferrable credit.

Currently you cannot mix payment types for a single reservation or even one that you are booking for multiple people. At the end of 2023 SW announced it will be rolling out the ability to pay with points and cash combined this spring, but I have not seen any announcement on the timeline. One would hope it is coming soon. You could call customer service to see if they know, but I doubt they do.

Interesting I see what you are saying, the code is taking 25% off of a much higher point fee then if you just look at it without a code; 25% off of 16K pts vs without fee is 12K points. That does seem a bit suspect.

It took me a wile to understand their postings; You are getting the points, it is just that they have two lines one for tier qualifying and one for the points that are available for you to use toward a flight. The 8K points are the credit card points you see in your total to use toward new flights, in addition that entire amount also counts toward companion fare. You will also get 1500 for every $5000 CC dollars spent, so it has different row that shows 0 additional points because you do not get these as additional points available for use to fly because that was included in the 8K line: This $0 line is to increase your tier qualifying points only. It is broken out a little different than your flight that shows both in the one line; you will always have some portion of a paid flight go toward Tier status, but you may not have a portion of your credit card; For example if the CC was only 3000 you would not get the tier status allocation because you did not reach the 5K required.
